Winter energy saving tips
As we head into the cooler months, it’s a great time to remember some simple ways to stay warm and dry this winter. Staying on top of the cold doesn’t have to cost extra, small daily habits can make a big difference.
Here are our top tips to help keep you and your whānau warm and dry this winter for less:
Make the most of the sun
Open your curtains first thing every morning to let in free heat from the sun. Then, close them at dusk to trap the warmth inside and block out the chill.
Ventilate every day
Fresh air is key to a healthy, dry home. Open windows on opposite sides of the house for at least 10 minutes a day, even in winter, this will help reduce dampness and mould.
Wipe condensation daily
Remove moisture from windows every morning. If left, it will re-evaporate, meaning your home stays damp, making it harder to heat.
Use your dehumidifier wisely
If you need to use one, run your dehumidifier while heating the room. It works more efficiently on warm air, helping to dry out the space faster.
Dry clothes outside when you can
Using indoor drying racks increases dampness in your home. If drying indoors is the only option, do it in a well-ventilated room and open a window slightly.
Block drafts
Use door snakes or rolled-up towels to stop cold air sneaking in under doors. Check windows and older frames for breezes and block where you can.
Close off unused rooms
Shut doors to rooms you’re not using to keep the heat where it’s needed most.
These simple tips can help you create a warmer, drier, healthier home for you and your whānau this winter. Stay warm!
