New cable and substation support Selwyn growth

Rapid and sustained growth in Rolleston has meant starting the construction of a new West Rolleston zone substation to make sure communities have access to a strong and secure power network.

“Rolleston has quickly become a popular place for people to live, work and play. With all the growth in the area there’s a need for more power infrastructure to increase our capacity,” says Orion GM Electricity Network Steve Macdonald.

The Orion Group and its contractor Isaac Construction are currently working around the intersection of Dunns Crossing Road and Burnham School Road to install underground power cables to connect to the new substation. Work to install the first of these cables along the berm on Dunns Crossing Road has now been completed.

“We realise road works are disruptive and we’re doing this during the summer holidays to minimise the disruption to the community. I’d like to thank the people of Rolleston for your patience as we complete this essential work. This ensures we can continue to deliver a safe, reliable and resilient network to serve our Selwyn customers,” says Steve.

During January 2025, the intersection of Dunns Crossing Road and Burnham School Road will be closed as we work to install new underground power cables. Detour routes will be signposted. Please follow all signs and instructions from our crew.

Construction of the West Rolleston Zone Substation is underway and is expected to be completed in April 2025. Most the work will be contained within the site on Burnham School Road, however traffic management may be in place at times. Please follow all signs and instructions from the crew.

Work will generally be carried out between 6am-6pm from Monday to Saturday. Visit our have your say project page for more details.
